La Tomatina (Spain)

 

The Spanish grow an awful lot of tomatoes.  This needs celebrating.  What better way than to throw them at each other?  Every year, in Buñol, Valencia, the Spanish enjoy nothing more than to throw tomatoes at La Tomatina And why not?  Beats throwing donkeys off churches.  My family happens to live in the Valencia region, and I fully intend to attend though it’s worth noting – I’ve been to a few Spanish festivals and I know that alcohol and chaos feature strongly.

Wife Carrying

This unusual sport tests husband’s stamina and in what way he is able to show that the true love conquers all. This Finnish sport consists of a man carrying a women, she doesn’t have to be his wife, and trying to overcome all the obstacles in their way (literary). Isn’t it just so romantic? According to the International Wife Carrying Rules Committee the wife has to weigh at least 108 pounds. However in North America women carry men, trying to be the first at the finish line.

Zorb Ball

Rolling down the hill in a giant ball might be considered fun. It looks pretty safe and when you visit New Zeland this should be one of the things you should most definitely do. Zorb down the hill.

Unicycle Hockey

Playing hockey wasn’t dangerous enough so they invented the unicycle hockey. I wonder how long it will take before they start playing it on ice.

Tuna Throwing

Another unusual sport on the list is tuna throwing. It is held in Port Lincoln in South Australia. A tune fish can weigh up to 50kg. So you need some heavy lifters like Dean Lukin who was the Olympic Gold medalist lifter therefore he is a champion in tune throwing, too.

Shin Kicking

The harder you kick your opponent’s shins the better. The goal of the game is that you kick as hard as you can, forcing your opponent to fall down. The Shin kicking competitors are petitioning to enroll this discipline in the Olympic Games.

Cat Fish Grabbers

Is said to be the art of fishing with your hands, the goal is to jump in the water and wrestle with a catfish, trying to catch it. You have to be skilful, fast and strong. Even girls like this unusual sport.

Worm Charming

If you want to win in this crazy game you have to dig into mud trying to dig out some worms. The winner is the one who catches the most worms. It is a bit slimy but it seems to be kind of fun. But the question is if you cut the worm in two do they count it a one worm or two?

Underwater Rugby

The only requirement to play this sport is to know how to swim and maybe hold your breath. It is played in a pool of about 4m depth, with 11players on each side score a goal by getting the weighted ball in the opposing team’s basket which is at the bottom of the pool. You just have to pray that you won’t run out of air, it’s a long way up.
